Final Mesh Lid Custom Build
DIY Guide

Custom Aquarium Mesh Lid

A step-by-step guide to building a sleek, clear top for your tank.

Open-top tanks look great, but they are risky for fish like Wrasses, Gobies, and Clownfish that are prone to jumping. This guide shows you how to build a Custom Mesh Lid using standard window screen materials. It is inexpensive, easy to build, and does not block light.

1. Measure & Cut Frame

You need to measure the inner lip of your aquarium where the lid will sit. Important: Do not cut the aluminum frame to the exact tank size. You must account for the plastic corners.

Calculation: Subtract the length of the plastic corners (typically 1.5" total) from your measurements before cutting the aluminum rails.

  • Step 1: Measure the length and width of the tank's inner lip.
  • Step 2: Cut 4 pieces of aluminum frame (2 Length / 2 Width), subtracting the corner allowance.
  • Step 3: Assemble the frame by inserting the rails into the plastic square corners.

Tip: If you want a black frame to match your tank rim, spray paint the silver frame with Krylon Fusion and let it dry for 48 hours before adding mesh.

2. Install the Mesh

You want the mesh to be tight enough that it doesn't sag, but not so tight that it bends the frame inward.

  • Step 4: Place the frame on a flat surface with the spline groove facing up.
  • Step 5: Lay the 1/4" mesh netting over the frame, leaving about 2 inches of overhang on all sides.
  • Step 6: Use the Spline Roller to push the rubber spline into the groove over the mesh. Work your way around the frame, gently pulling the mesh tight as you roll.

3. Trim Excess Material

Use a sharp utility knife for a clean cut. A dull blade can snag the mesh and ruin the tension.

Step 7: Angle your knife blade outward (away from the center of the lid) and run it along the outside edge of the spline channel. This ensures you cut off the excess mesh without cutting the part that holds the lid together.

4. Finished Lid

Place the lid on your tank. It should sit flush on the rim, providing a secure barrier that is nearly invisible.
